Artist’s Statement
Some people dance because it is something to do, or because they are good at it. But for me, dance is life. In fact, it is a way a living; a lifestyle that I have created for myself and that I am continuing to design. To lose dance would mean the loss of myself. It would mean the loss of the syncopation between the earth’s natural rhythm and my movement and if that were to cease to exist I would not be as complete. Through dance so much can be conveyed; emotions, ideas, and belief. Dance is a living and breathing work of art that is constantly in motion. Visual artists use a canvas and dancers use whatever surface they can find to dance upon. I believe that dancing is not only a way for me to live but it is away for me to help others as well. Dance is a way to bring so many different people together and through dance I can reach out and others. Because of the discipline required to dance I have become a very focused person and do not stray from my objective. I do not judge myself by my accomplishments but rather by the method through which I have achieved success, for how much value can one honestly place on achievement that is unearned? I refuse to sink into the mire of self-aggrandizement. I remember to offer a small thought of thanks to those who have taught me to be strong, to believe in myself, to work hard, and to value each small success not because I am better or more talented than another, but because each was earned. I am thankful for my ability to move and I wish to cherish and share that with everyone who wishes to understand for I believe that Stillness leads to the Depression of Mind.
